Abstract
What does it mean to be a human artist in an increasingly AI-powered world? Should artists adopt an uncompromising ethical stance and reject AI outright, or should they tap into its indisputable power in order to unleash creative potential?
The human artist who made this artwork is sympathetic to the former but chooses the latter, with an ambition to better understand the dangers of AI though active engagement with this new medium. This painting celebrates the time and labour that goes into a human hand-rendered artwork but shows how a machine can multiply and amplify that meaty endeavour with terrifying proficiency. At the centre of the artwork is a semi-abstract portrayal of a human subject, painted entirely by the human hand of the human artist. Surrounding this original artwork are AI generated reinterpretations of that image, created using Adobe Photoshop’s AI-based Generative Fill tool. Fixed firmly within the frame of modernist painting, human-centred authorship swirls out and into the hands of the machine.
