Abstract
This contribution examines the practical event management issues arising from the use of sacred buildings for events: specifically from the perspective of Catholic churches that are being repurposed following their decommissioning and preparation for reuse. A common outcome of that repurposing is to provide venues for events; the issues considered are often applicable to existing churches and their associated buildings. Key to this discussion is the range of theological perspectives arising from a theology of sacred place and space, which differs between and within denominations and religions. However, the event management issues that arise are consistent, and so this paper proposes an approach that can support churches in their decision-making and activity in this area. The paper aims to support the Guidelines on Decommissioning and Ecclesial Reuse of Churches agreed at the Conference ‘Doesn’t God Dwell Here Anymore?’, held in Rome in November 2018.
