Abstract
This paper discusses the history and importance of ‘the weekend’ for both work and leisure from the perspective of a weekend librarian. By examining the rise and (possible) fall of the British ‘industrial weekend’ of recreation it is possible to reflect on the implications for future working hours in the academic library sector.
