openDemocracy.
Abstract
Journalist Vladimir Herzog died in custody; his body found hung by his own belt strap from the bars of his cell. The official cause of death was suicide. Few in Brazil accepted this statement. In this piece for the website open Democracy the context of the events surrounding Herzog's death are examined through what they can tell us about the growth of the Populist Right in Brazil, and the events of dissent associated with the movement that has brough Jair Bolsanaro into power in Brazil in 2018.
